King Proteus’s new single is a hauntingly beautiful version of a stellar example of The Beatles’ complex pop. Bitter and sweet, forlorn and ascending, dark and light - KP have refashioned the track according to their own intimate paradigm, casting it in a new colour that is poignantly summarised in the ending dialogue section.

The meshing of soulful vocal lines, minimalist yet masterful instrumentation, non-linear chord progressions, and the expected unexpected twists and builds of D.Jiritano’s arrangement takes the prowess of the Perth Quartet further still. Flourishes of chiming guitar and moody piano textures, are couched as always in the deft touch of D.Rajendram’s post-jazz-rock drumming, and the sparse use of samples and sound treatments adds a contemporary tone to the traditional beauty of melody.

KP’s Blackbird is a modern classic and its emotional punch will resonate long after the outro fades away.
